Give us pedestrian bridges in Ibafo, Berger, Nigerians cry out

Published by Tribune on Mon, 11 Apr 2011

Road users in Ibafo and Berger areas of Ogun State have sent a distress message to government over incessant loss of lives in the communities through auto crashes. They are asking the authorities to construct pedestrian bridges in the communities. The inhabitants said vehicles usually knock down people while trying to dash across the highway. For instance, a woman of about 35 years old, was reported killed by a fast moving vehicle recently in Berger when she tried to run across the road with a bag of blocked ice water she purchased from the other side of the road.Several other persons were also reportedly crushed in the past by some callous motorists, who failed to slow down while approaching most of the busy commercial spots and designated bus stops.Berger is a major bus stop for both intra and inter-cities vehicles and usually witnesses a huge human and vehicular traffic at every moment of the day.On the other hand, Ibafo, which falls in Ogun State, has become prominent lately because of the upsurge of housing estates in the area.A resident of the area, Alhaji Adekunle Olainni, said he saw the corpse of the woman, she died before any one could come to her rescue.According to him, such tragic deaths had become common lately because of over speeding by motorists, coupled with the absence of a pedestrian bridge. He accused motorists of subverting all known traffic rules and regulations by converting all places to bus-stops.He said they do not only park indiscriminately, but also threatened the lives of other road users who challenged them for picking passengers at unauthorised places.
