Amir Khan Has Talks with Manny Pacquiao and Kell Brook, Slams Floyd Mayweather

Published by Bleacher Report on Wed, 29 Jul 2015

Amir Khan has revealed talks have taken place with promoters about potential fights with Kell Brook and Manny Pacquiao in 2016. The Brit also aimed a jab at Floyd Mayweather for cherry-picking his opponents. In an interview with the National (h/t Sky Sports), Khan admitted he has spoken with IBF champion Brooks representative Eddie Hearn about a possible showdown at Wembley Stadium. But fight fans may have to wait until next year before catching a glimpse of the pair in the ring:Eddie sent me a text and I invited him to Bolton. We had a meeting at my office and we discussed everything for a potential fight against Brook in 2016.I have made it clear to Eddie that I want this fight to be a big fight worldwide, not just in the UK.I told him Kell needs to fight a couple of big names and beat them, obviously. That will make our fight even bigger. The fight will be a Khan Promotions and Matchroom Promotions event in the UK, at Wembley Stadium. Both men are currently striving to make the step up to the elite level of the sport. Khan enjoyed a comprehensive points win over Chris Algieri last time out, while Brook stopped Frankie Gavin in emphatic style in his previous outing.FightNights.com doesnt think there is any excuse for Khan to swerve a potential Wembley date with his compatriot:Khan may have other options, though. Speaking with the National (h/tEdward Chaykovsky of boxingscene.com), the British fighter also revealed he has had contact with Pacquiao about a potential fight in Dubai, with 2016 again on the agenda for the 28-year-old:There have been talks of an Amir Khan fight in Dubai for many years now.Everyone knows my position: I am ready to fight if they are serious about it. Bob Arum has contacted my team to fight Manny Pacquiao around March or April in Dubai. Lets see how that develops.Since Floyd is running scared, I want Pacquiao in 2016 when he is back from his injury; 2016 will be Amir Khans year; you will see me in two of the biggest fights in that year. One of those big fights mentioned is unlikely to be against Mayweather. The undefeated American, who beat Pacquiao easily in May, looks set to fight Andre Berto in what'll be his 49th professional bout, seemingly ignoring interest from the Khan clan to set a date.According to another piece from Chaykovsky, Floyd's camp has suggested Khan cost himself a shot by talking too much. But the Brit insisted he's been given no indication that's the case and has accused the American of choosing opponents a little too carefully, per the National:That is false; no one from Mayweathers team got in touch with me. He can use whatever excuses he likes, but the bottom line is Floyd is scared. He knows Im fast and can give him his first loss. Amir Khan brings more money, more fans, more exposure on the table.I mean, my fight against Chris Algieri got the highest-ever ratings in 10 years of a free-to-air boxing bout in the US. Everybody is criticising him for not picking me; the likes of Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler. Hes been cherry-picking all his career. As noted bySteve Kim of UCNLive.com, Mayweather's potential decision to fight Berto, who has lost three of his last six bouts, is likely to rile the British boxer:A fight with Brook seems the most likely at this point and a 2016 date does make sense. If both men can conquer quality opposition in their next outings, the event would command significant gravitas. As was evident by the Carl Froch-George Groves showdown at Wembley in 2014, the appetite is there to be tapped into to fill an 80,000-seat venue by the British public. With two fighters at the peak of their powers, Khan-Brook could potentially be an even bigger occasion. Thankfully for fans of the sport in Britain and around the globe, its something that seems to be tantalisingly close to occurring. But for Khan, showdowns with Pacquiao and especially Mayweather look a long way off.
