Corps members inaugurate new plantain specie farm at Igbanke

Published by Tribune on Tue, 12 Apr 2011

Two youth corps members, Tochukwu Ofodile and John Kelechi Ugoayin, have launched a new plantain species farm, at Igbanke in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State. The new breed is said to be an improved yield of plantain and the farm which was located at Igbanke Grammar School, was launched on 6 April. The youth corps members said they tilled the soil and planted the new improved yield plantain variety with a group of students, pointing out that This species of plantain is of improved yield. It grows fast, matures fast and is free from disease.According to them, they were motivated to embark on this pet project because of the uniqueness of Igbanke soil. The soil is very fertile, quite unlike what you have in many other places where you expend too much energy on ridge digging, Ofodile said.Ofodile added that the involvement of the students would make it easy to convince the indigenes of Igbanke, mostly subsistence farmers to adopt the new breed plantain sourced from the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan. The Principal of the school, Mr. J.N Ajato, who spoke during the farm launch, said that the school authority was highly impressed and excited by the project, adding that is why we have provided them with land.Ajato appealed to the government of Edo State and the host community to support the project as it was capable of stemming youth restiveness since students were involved.
