Nigeria, great talent in ICT 'Microsoft

Published by Tribune on Mon, 12 Mar 2012

microsoft Corporation has described Nigeria as a global Information and Communication Technology (ICT) talent. The corporation's General Manager, Public Sector, Middle East and Africa, Elias Tabet, who made this assertion in Port Harcourt at the kick-off of the 2012 Imagine Cup Students Technology Competition also challenged government at all levels to encourage the development of ICT in the country.Tabet, who commended the Rivers State government for the lead it is taking in encouraging ICT development in younger generation, said the nation had a huge potential in the field, which was capable of marking her out as a strong global economy.'Nigeria is a great talent in ICT. A student who got the fifth place worldwide last year was the people's choice. This can tell you about the potential. This is why the government can help launch programmes like this from Microsoft and other companies.'At the end of the day, the profit, the target and the goal is uncovering talents and helping students learn more, compete more aggressively and become very marketable as people with talent and IT skill.'Our job is making students discover their talents, making them visible, to compete worldwide and introducing programmes that will establish a connection between the academic world and the professional world,' Tabet said.Speaking with journalists at the event, Special Adviser to the Rivers State governor on ICT, Goodliffe Nmekini, said the aim of the state government was to give students of tertiary institutions in the state opportunity of competing globally in the field of ICT.'The aim is to give tertiary students opportunities to compete like the rest of the students in the western world. Whether we like it or not, we are playing in a global economy so keeping them away from what really happens in the rest of the world is doing them a disservice,' he said.
