Ogun inaugurates committee on Yoruba/Fulani crisis

The crisis between the Yoruba and the fulani herdsmen in some Ogun State communities will soon be resolved as the state government has constituted an inter-ministerial security committee to settle, as well as look into the immediate and remote causes of lingering communal killings.The state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Muyiwa Oladipo, disclosed this in Abeokuta, recently that the killings between the Yoruba communities and Fulani herdsmen in Yewa North Local Government of the state needed quick intervention to forestall breakdown of law and order.Oladipo said, 'the killings between the Fulanis and the Yoruba in Yewa North Council Area is becoming alarming and it requires quick intervention of the state government to curb the situation before degenerating into a full blown ethno-communal crisis that could disrupt the general peace of the state and the nation at large.'He noted that, as part of security measures put in place to nip the crisis in the bud was the inter ministerial security committee which comprised the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs; Ministry of Justice; and the office of the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Security.He pointed out that, the committee was charged to find lasting solutions to the crisis by inviting all Obas/Baales, the Seriki Hausa/Fulani, the Chairmen/Secretaries of the Community Development Association (CDAs) of the affected areas.He said the Chairmen Transition Committee in all the 20 local governments should submit a comprehensive list of any Fulani settlement existing in their areas to the committee within a week in order to serve as part of materials to assist in finding a lasting solution to the crisis.The commissioner noted that the committee would not limit its findings, as well as conflict resolutions to Yewa North Local Government Area alone, but; Yewa South, Abeokuta North, Ijebu- Ode, Odogbolu, Odeda, among others that have buckets of these Fulani settlements in order to put in place necessary precautionary measures to prevent any future crisis in the state.
