Tony McDaniel to Buccaneers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 11 Aug 2015

Tony McDaniel was unemployed for a little over a week before he found a new home. According to NFL Network's Rand Getlin, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers agreed to a one-year deal with the veteran defensive tackle that could reach $2.5 million. McDaniel went on Twitter to confirm the news:The Seattle Seahawks released McDaniel on Aug. 2, which was a direct result of the contract extensions for Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner. The reigning NFC champions had to cut costs somewhere, and they determined McDaniel to be surplus to requirements. As Getlin noted, McDaniel isn't coming out the worse for wear after Monday:Seattle's loss is Tampa Bay's gain as well. McDaniel has started 29 regular-season games over the last two years, making 39 total tackles and two sacks. He's the second major acquisition the Bucs have made for the interior of the defensive line this year after they signed Henry Melton in March.Bleacher Report's Luke Easterling envisions McDaniel providing critical depth at defensive tackle:At the end of July, the Buccaneers placed Akeem Spence on the active/physically unable to perform list. On Aug. 2, Spence admitted he's "probably a couple more months away" from returning, per Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times. He could easily miss a good chunk of the season, which would've left the Bucs with a big hole in their squad.By agreeing to a deal with McDaniel, Tampa Bay is getting a proven contributor with a wealth of experience to fill in for Spence. At $2.5 million, his price tag is also more than reasonable. This isn't the kind of move that puts the Buccaneers over the top in pursuit of the playoffs, but they bolstered up what could've been a slight problem area once the regular season got underway.
