Daily Fantasy Golf 2015: Primer and Strategy for DraftKings PGA

Published by Bleacher Report on Tue, 11 Aug 2015

The major circuit in golf will wind to a close for the 2015 year at this weekend's PGA Championship beginning Thursday, but not before the world's top golfers go out with a bang at the iconic Whistling Straits Golf Course. It's a course that has played host to this very same major twice before, but a lot has changed in golf's hierarchy since the 2004 event won by Vijay Singh and the 2010 edition taken by Martin Kaymer. Case in point is the fact that Jordan Spieththe dominant man atop the sport in 2015was not yet 18 during Kaymer's 2010 win.Spieth is still the name on everyone's lips entering Whistling Straits, but he has some competition there with Rory McIlroy making his return from an ankle injury that kept him from defending his British Open and WGC-Bridgestone titles over the last month. Nabbing either of them may cripple your $50,000 DraftKings lineup, but we've provided a first-ballot favorite along with five other top-notch selections for daily fantasy prominence for Thursday and beyond.Jason Day ($10,800)The only thing not to like about Jason Day's golf in 2015 is the fact that he hasn't broken through for his first career major victory, and that much is surprising. He's broken through for five top-12 finishes in DraftKings competitions this year, with two coming in major near-misses at the U.S. Open and British Open.Want a tear of strong performances to lean on' Day has that going, as he won the RBC Canadian Open in late July after a fourth-place British Open finish and came in 12th at the WGC-Bridgestone. Want driving distance for prominence at Whistling Straits' long fairways' He's got that as well, ranking third in driving distance along with second in birdie average. With McIlroy and Spieth guaranteed to shoot down your chances of fielding a strong lineup from top to bottom, look Day's way to guarantee a high finish and give you a strong shot at slotting the tournament champion.Bubba Watson ($9,900)Oh, Bubba Watson. There are those tournaments in which everything comes together and he looks virtually unbeatable, and then the other ones, when he looks universes away from the golfer who won the Masters twice in the last four years. However, he's arguably the most consistent golfer on tour lately. Watson is fresh off two consecutive second-place finishes and is less than two months removed from his Travelers Championship victory. That, along with his massive ball-striking ability, will prevent him from missing the cut and have him in contention deep into Sunday.Matt Kuchar ($8,300)Matt Kuchar's tied-for-58th finish at the British Open left a lot to be desired, but he's gotten back to form over the last couple of tournaments. Despite a 25th-place finish at the WGC-Bridgestone, he ranked second in the tournament in driving accuracy.Ranking in the top 10 in putting average on the PGA Tour, Kuchar's flat stick will allow him to gain back strokes on the field, and his ability to keep the ball on the fairway will be beyond crucial at Whistling Straits.Danny Willett ($7,200)The early prominence of Danny Willettwhich undoubtedly shocked the world of golfat the British Open was not a fluke, as he proved by winning the Omega European Masters the very next week and finishing 17th at WGC-Bridgestone.Ranking 10th on the European Tour in stroke average proves that Willett is not a one-hit wonder. If he can keep his driving accuracy issues under control and stay in the middle of the course, Willett will be around to threaten a top-20 finish.Brendon Todd ($7,000)As has been stated before, driving accuracy is the key strength that golfers can use at Whistling Straits to level the playing field, and Brendon Todd should do just that. His 70.82 percent of fairways hit ranks a highly impressive ninth on the PGA Tour, which spans a whopping 80 rounds of golf.Todd struggled last weekend at WGC-Bridgestone but still posted one sub-70 round fresh off a 12th-place finish at the British Open and a sixth-place outing at Greenbrierthe latter of which included four rounds below 70. Anything similar this weekend will have Todd vastly outplaying his conservative price tag.Robert Streb ($6,800)It's hard to find a golfer with more consistency over the last several months than Robert Streb anywhere in the field, much less this far down in the salary books. He's fresh off a fifth-place finish at WGC-Bridgestone that included three rounds of 68, holing 21 birdies throughout the tournament. That's only where Streb's formidability ended, but it started way back at Wells Fargo in May when he finished tied for fourth. Including that result, Streb has logged top-20 finishes in seven of his last eight outings and made the cut in nine of 10 tournaments.
