Untimely meeting of northern leaders

Published by Nigerian Compass on Wed, 14 Mar 2012

The recent meeting of the northern leaders to find solution to the wave of insecurity in the northern part of this country is untimely, waste and unnecessary to say the least. The various initiatives by these so-called leaders should have come before now, hence the delay has causedthe lost of more lives in the northern part of this country. The northern leaders should be held responsible for the fate that has bedeviled the north at present, this could be attributed to the lack of purposeful leadership that would see the region at par with other parts of the country that have excelled in all index of human endeavour. The north has been in the back seat all these years; since the demise of the likes of late Sardauna, Dr Ahmadu Bello, and the late Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, and a host of others, who gave the north that kind of leadership, it required at that time. The menace of insecurity affecting the region could be attributed to a lot of factors like imbalance in educational sector, unemployment, injustice, lack sustainable leadership and above all nepotism and mistrust amongst the various segments of the entire north; be it religion, tribe and ethnicity that was not known during the First Republic when the late Sardauna held sway as the leader in the entire north without any form discrimination. The unity notice during the First Republic that saw the entire north speaking with one voice and also going to war to keep the unity of this country intact is missing at present. The entire north is so balkanised that even the so-called northern state governors forum is not united seen the mistrust amongst the governors, where the likes of Plateau State Governor does not feel comfortable attending the meeting. The leaders would always converge at the expense of the north to say they are representing the north in any peace meeting. What were the roles they played at the initial start of the dreadedBoko Haram, what we notice from them was silence, without making any pronouncements till the situation is threatening to consume them. They are now running from pillar to post, deceiving themselves that they are with the northern people in this time of their needs. We find it difficult to realise their desperate move to initiate such meetings at this hour, when lives were lost in the past, without them making bold to call for the stop to such heinous acts. Its behooves them to be sincere in this projects of finding lasting solution to this menace of insecurity that has consumed innocent lives, both from the north and other parts of the country. The Boko Haram issue has thrown the entire north social, economic and politicalprospects back many years and it would take a miracle to bring it back to its optimal level with other parts of the country.
