Guardiola shuns Chelsea, eyes new deal at Barca

Published by Tribune on Thu, 15 Mar 2012

PEP Guardiola looks set to agree a new one-year deal to remain as boss of Barcelona. And that news will come as a crushing blow to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, who had earmarked the Spaniard as a successor to Andre Villas-Boas.Portuguese flop Villas-Boas was axed after a disastrous eight months in charge and Roberto Di Matteo has been handed the reins until the end of the season.Abramovich is a big fan of the free-flowing, attacking brand of football Guardiola has instilled in his Barca troops.Since replacing Frank Rijkaard at the helm in 2008, the 41-year-old has steered Barca to an unprecedented level of success. He has won three league championships, two Champions League crowns, one Spanish Cup, three Spanish Super Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup twice. And Russian oligarch Abramovich was keen to offer Guardiola a huge salary to quit Spain and turn Chelsea's flagging fortunes around. But according to Marca, Guardiola and his assistant Francesc Vilanova held talks over extending their stay at the Nou Camp earlier today with leading agent Jose Maria Orobitg.Jose Mourinho has also been linked with a move back to Chelsea, with the Real Madrid manager spotted looking for a new house in London.
