T.Y. Hilton, Colts Agree to New Contract: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 13 Aug 2015

The Indianapolis Colts secured the future of quarterback Andrew Luck's favorite target on Thursdayby signing explosive wide receiver T.Y. Hilton to a new contract. Its a great day for the Indianapolis Colts, T.Y. Hilton and his family, said Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson. Were extremely happy as an organization to ensure that T.Y. will continue to be a part of our journey for many years to come. His daily excellence on and off the field is a shining example of an individual striving for greatness and what it truly means to be a Colt.Though financial details have yet to be released,NFL Network's Ian Rapoportreported "its a five-year extension for $65 million. Under contract for 6 years," which colleague Albert Breer confirmed. He also noted "Hilton's deal with Colts has $39 million in guaranteed, runs thru 2020."Hilton started to emerge as Indy's No. 1 pass-catcher in 2013 when he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark, but 2014 represented his true breakthrough, as he reeled in 82 receptions for 1,345 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games. The former third-round pick officially surpassed Reggie Wayne on the depth chart and established himself as one of the NFL's most dangerous deep threats.Colts owner Jim Irsay was well aware of that fact, which is why he expressed interest in signing the 25-year-old speedster to a new deal prior to the start of the 2015 campaign, per ESPN.com's Mike Wells:We have a little time with trying to work on a few extensions. There's no reason Anthony Castonzo and T.Y. Hilton can't get done. Look for us to keep core players and our top players. I don't think it'll be a distraction. I can't see why we can't get something done before Labor Day with T.Y. and Anthony.Hilton shared Irsay's hope of negotiating a new contract, but it wasn't something that he allowed himself to worry about during preparations for the season, according to Steve Andress of Colts.com:For me, I'm just going out here and having fun. That's between my agent, the Colts, and whatever they decide to do. I'm just out here having fun, bonding with my teammates, and just continue to get better. For me, you want to get it out of the way, but it's nothing I can do. Control what I can control. The former Florida International standout wasn't fully unconcerned with his contract situation, though, as he seemingly made reference to it on Twitter after Demaryius Thomas of the Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant inked matching five-year deals:Those signings seemed to get the ball rolling with regard to Hilton, and he was ultimately able to reach a deal that should keep him in blue and white for many years to come.Hilton is far from the only weapon in Indy's offense, but with Andre Johnson getting up there in terms of age and the other receivers still needing to prove themselves on a consistent basis, No. 13 is the biggest slam dunk moving forward.Luck and Hilton have had excellent synergy since the very start, and they are now in line to grow together as a tandem, much like Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison did for the Colts previously.Reaching that same level of success won't be easy, but there is no question that they have that potential, and the Colts invested in it in a big way.Follow @MikeChiari on Twitter.
