Rusev Is Shining Despite Poor Booking Heading into WWE SummerSlam 2015

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 13 Aug 2015

Over the last two years, there have been few wrestlers in the world as dominant as Rusev, but porous booking for several months leading into the 2015 edition of WWEs SummerSlam has hindered the Bulgarian Brutes momentum.Instead of being portrayed as a top heel, Rusev has been turned into a comedy act.For a year, hewas undefeated and one of the strongest-booked wrestlers on the WWE roster, but a loss to JohnCena stalled his momentum. Since losing to the Face That Runs the Place, Rusev has been booked as a whiny heel who is having trouble getting over his former manager, Lana.Despite being handed a storyline that doesnt utilize his talents and skills to their fullest, Rusev is taking lemons and making lemonade. He is selling his character with 100 percent effort and getting the WWE Universe to care about him.Even with the terrible writing in this storyline between Rusev and his current challenger, Dolph Ziggler, fans carethanks in part to the effort of Rusev. It doesn't help that Rusev missed time with an ankle injury and thatZiggler is away filming a movie, but the scheduling of this program falls on the shoulders of the men and women behind the scenes calling the shots, not the performers in the ring. One positive that has come out of this secondary angle is that Rusev is finally developing a character beyond his monster heel gimmick. While it isn't the ideal use of his talent, Rusev has proved he can be entertaining on the mic and has a legitimate personality. Instead of allowing the terrible storyline to bury him, the Bulgarian Brute is letting his fun and interesting personality shine through.Rusev is willing and able to take what the company hands him and make it work. Not only does it show how much talent Rusev has as a performer, but it also proves to WWE officials that he can take whatever angle he is handed and sell it to the fans.Rusev is rolling with the punches and making it work despite the porous writing.Another reason anything Rusev touches works is his skill in the ring. For a man his size, he has freakish athleticism and can put on a great match with almost anyone. The battle in the ring between Rusev and Zigglerwhenever it eventually happenswill be an incredible showcase of two of the most underrated wrestlers on the roster. As much as Rusev has proved he should be a top heel in WWE, another reason this secondary storyline is helping him is that he is attached to both Lana and Summer Rae. The two women are essentially fighting over the Bulgarian Brute, and that makes the heel look like an egotistical maniac. He is playing the kind of character fans can detest. With casual fans enjoying the battle between Lana and Summer and seeing Rusev associated with both women, every member of the WWE Universe is now witnessing firsthand just how well Rusev is executing his role in the program despite the lackluster writing he is forced to deal with on a weekly basis.Instead of allowing Rusev to wallow in the midcard, WWE should be booking him strong like it did before he lost to Cena several times around WrestleMania 31. Proper booking for Rusev moving forward and another lengthy winning streak would send him right back to the main event scene.Rusev has the size and skill to be a top heel in the WWE, and the company needs stars of his caliber. With that in mind, maybe officials should start building him properly. Just a thought. For more wrestling talk, listen toRing Rust Radiofor all of the hot topics or catch the latest episode in the player above (some language NSFW).
