PDP national chairmanship: Panel shortlists 5 aspirants

AS the preparations for the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hots up, a special panel put in place by the leadership of the party to shop for a suitable candidate as its next national chairman among its array of aspirants has shortlisted five for possible consideration for the job.Nigerian Tribune learnt in Abuja last night that those who made the list of the panel headed by the Rivers State governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, were special adviser to the late President Umar Yar'Adua on National Assembly Matters, Senator Abba Aji; the incumbent national publicity secretary, Professor Rufai Ahmed Alkali and the former governor of the old Gongola State, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.Others were the incumbent acting national secretary, Dr Musa Babayo and a Second Republic politician, who was the running mate to the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Shettima MustaphaIt was learnt that the shortlisted aspirants would still undergo another round of screening, during which one of them would be picked as a consensus candidate ahead of the convention slated for March 24.Nigerian Tribune further gathered that the South-West zone of the party had also been mandated to produce a consensus candidate among its numerous aspirants for the office of the national secretary ahead of the convention.This is coming just as the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party had taken possession of the master list of all the aspirants that met the deadline set for the purchase and return of nomination forms for the various offices.
