Super Eagles: Siasia not ready to recall Yakubu

Published by Tribune on Wed, 13 Apr 2011

HEAD coach of the Super Eagles, Samson Siasia, is not in haste to recall Leicester City striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni to the senior national team in spite of his current form.Yakubu has scored seven goals for the English Championship side since his loan move from Everton, and sources said he may have to wait longer to reclaim his shirt in the new-look Super Eagles. He said he needs to groom the younger strikers to take over from players like Aiyegbeni. He said if you are talking of rebuilding, then one should not talk of inviting Aiyegbeni now because he is looking the way of younger players, a source informed MTNFootball.comSiasia is also said not to be interested in having Sunderland defender, Nedum Onuoha in the team any longer, after the latter failed to commit his international future to Nigeria when the coach visited England in December. The ball is in Onuohas court in this matter. Siasia will only talk to the player once he has signified interest to play for Nigeria, a sourceclose to the coach told MTNFootball.com.The coach said he wont force any player to play for the country but he can only persuade players and make them see reasons why they should play for the Eagles. So it is now left to such players.Siasia has been in Europe searching for top central defenders.Siasia believes that Nigeria is blessed with players even better than Onuoha and that it would just require an extra effort to look around for such players, another team source disclosed. He said as a player he was never begged to play for Eagles but he saw the opportunity of playing for Nigeria as a rare privilege and which should be cherished also.
