PGA Championship Leaderboard 2015: Updating Results and Standings for Friday

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 14 Aug 2015

Call Friday a day of redemption for some of the biggest names at Whistling Straits in the second round of the 2015 PGA Championship.Thursday's opening round was a bit odd for some recognizable faces. Jordan Spieth's epic tear cooled with a 71, placing him five shots off the lead. Ditto for running mate Rory McIlroy, although most expected early struggles as he made his way back from injury.Still, things are far from conclusive, and the lead isn't insurmountable by any means. With a pseudo warm-up round out of the way, expect things to become even more bunched on the leaderboard as Friday progresses. Here's a look at an ever-updating leaderboard, followed by some of Friday's top names to watch.Top Golfers to Watch FridayDustin JohnsonEveryone remembers Dustin Johnson for the rough finish at the U.S. Open in which he tied for second, but perhaps more devastating was the tie for 49th at the Open Championship.Johnson looks back to form at the season's final major, though, thanks the to five birdies and an eagle on No. 16 which gave him an opening-round 66. As ESPN Stats & Info detailed, he made history as a result:A simple sentence from Johnson about the day's action said it all, viaBill Pennington of the New York Times: Today was pretty easy, I have to say.The key for Johnson now becomes keeping the chill attitude and strong form through Friday, which has been an issue at previous majors, to say the least. It's important to keep in mind that the last time Johnson played this tournament (2013), he shot his way to a tie for eighth. The last time the tournament was at this course, he posted a career-best tie for fifth.Given history and recent form, Johnson isn't one to ignore. He might have a prolonged stay at the top of the leaderboard.Matt KucharIt's been a long time since the globe has seen Matt Kuchar anywhere near the top 10 at the PGA Championship, so his opening-round 68 was a nice surprise. Then again, maybe "surprise" isn't the right word, considering that the last time Kuchar posted a finish in the top 10 also happened to be the last time this tournament took place at Whistling Straits.See a trend from the opening round'Kuchar carded six birdies to two bogeys and faded a tad down the stretch, but it was an impressive day nevertheless. He had an interesting comment after his outing, via Brian Wacker of PGATour.com:As a grizzled veteran, Kuchar should know just what it takes to keep the momentum alive going into Friday and beyond. If he feels the course plays the same way into the weekend, his name might rise even higher.Martin KaymerThe trend meets its peak here with Martin Kaymer, the winner of 2010's event at the same venue. Since' Three cuts and a tie for 33rd.But here Kaymer is, just four shots off the lead entering Friday morning after five birdies. Were it not for a miserable double bogey on No. 9, the German superstar would be even closer to Johnson and Co. up top.Kaymer spoke with reporters after the round about where he wants to improve, viaMark Lamport-Stokes of Reuters:It was obviously a very disappointing finish. I played really well and hit a lot of quality shots. I gave myself a lot of chances but didn't make many putts. I made a few here and there but I gave myself plenty of chances to shoot five or six under par, then I finished by losing two shots. There's plenty of time for Kaymer to put the rough spot on the scorecard behind him and further ride the strong form most know from him at this venue. On Friday, look for Kaymer to put his knowledge of the course to use as he attempts to claw his way closer to the lead.Stats and info courtesy of PGATour.com unless otherwise specified.
