Netball World Cup 2015: Scores, Results, Fixtures After Saturday's Semi-Finals

Published by Bleacher Report on Sat, 15 Aug 2015

Sixteen became two at the 2015 Netball World Cup on Saturday, as the semi-finals took centre stage with New Zealand, England, Jamaica and hosts Australia all looking to book their place in the gold medal match. The highly fancied Silver Ferns kicked off proceedings against England having reached the last four unbeaten, before the Diamonds of Australia entertained Jamaica.Heres a look at the scores and match recaps from a dramatic day of netball in Sydney.New Zealand Too Hot for EnglandNew Zealand came into their semi-final showdown with England on Saturday looking like they meant business. As the teams rolled out on to the Allphones Arena stage, there wasnt a smile between them. While Waimarama Taumunus side knew they were favouritesand deservedly sothey also knew they could ill-afford to rest on their laurels against the talented English. Not a second of it, though, as New Zealand stormed out of the traps and quickly established a 4-0 lead, before heading 11-5 in front after the first quarter.A few generous offensive penalties gave England a lifeline in the second, as Pamela Cookey orchestrated a 12-10 quarter win for the Roses. That left the scores at 21-17 at the halfway mark, but the Silver Ferns still knew they had what it took to go on and win.Maria Tutaia seemingly couldnt miss, notching up her first 10 shots with minimal fuss, while Bailey Mes also looked in impressive form. After a few stern words from Taumunu at half-time, New Zealand came out once again looking like a force and quickly cemented their dominance on the match.Casey Kopua handled everything that the Roses could throw at her, while Mes and Tutaia continued to look imperious. The latter was finding the net from every angle, including this impressive shot from the edge of the D, as Netball World Cup revealed:Naturally, the praise was coming in thick and fast for Tutaia, including from Manchester Thunder coach Dan Ryan:The Silver Ferns were up by 37-27 as the third quarter closed, with a simple bit of focus separating them from the final. And they duly managed to keep their wits about them, winning 50-39 and issuing a statement to their potential opposition.Diamonds Set Up All-Australasia FinalAgainJamaica and Australia came into their clash knowing a date with the best team in the world awaited them if they could emerge victorious, and the early jitters were clear to see.Still, it was the Diamonds who settled down the quickest, as Caitlin Bassetts flick shot started the party.Australia quickly hit double figures and left Jamaica with some catching up to do, but with Romelda Aiken looking lethal around the net, the Sunshine Girls knew they could make up the ground. At the end of the first quarter, the Aussies were looking over their shoulders with a 17-15 lead and needed a big lift if they were to maintain their dominance. They got exactly that, though, moving into a 35-26 lead at half-time with Bassett pulling the strings. The Aussie was playing some sensational netball, scoring 26 from 26 attempts at the intervalas West Coast Fever revealed:Jamaica surged back, however, cutting the deficit to just seven points at 49-42 at the end of the third quarter. They were playing some great, free-flowing stuff, too, per Netball World Cup:An early onslaught in the final quarter would have given them a great chance to beat Australia, but the hosts just found an extra gear and cruised to an 11-point, 67-56 victory in the end.It was nothing more than their performance deserved, either, as they were solid in defence and lethal at the basket.Theyll have to put on the performance of their lives to dethrone the Silver Ferns in the final, but the signs are very encouraging.New Zealand and Australia will meet for the fifth World Cup final in a row on Sunday, and if the two semi-finals are anything to go by, there will undoubtedly be fireworks.
