Published by Tribune on Wed, 13 Apr 2011

THE Gombe State gubernatorial candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Abubakar Aliyu, has called on the national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, to scrutinise officials of the commission in the state, alleging that there are some of the officials that are not living up to their responsibilities. He alleged that some of the officials had affairs with the government in power, just as he threatened to go court if INEC did not reverse the results of National Assembly election as announced.Aliyu made the call, while speaking with newsmen in Gombe at an interactive session, on Tuesday, saying that the senatorial election held on Saturday, in which Governor Dan-juma Goje was declared winner, was marred with irregularities. He alleged that a lot of offences that contradicted the electoral acts were perpetrated during the election, saying that he had facts to support his argument. The CPC gubernatorial candidate further alleged that governments official vehicles were involved in the movement of electoral materials and traditional leaders were noticed participating in partisan politics on the day of the election in some wards. We will soon petition INEC on the validity of the result that returned Governor Goje as the senator-elect for Gombe Central senatorial district, he said.It will be recalled that barely two hours after the election was over, the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Godfrey Miri, had, while briefing the press, said INEC had constituted a committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the late arrival of electoral materials in about 30 polling units in Garko ward of Gombe central senatorial district.Godfrey Miri also said that, I cannot personally say as to the reason for the late arrival of the materials, because they were issued in a time, good enough to arrive the designated voting centres on scheduled time. Whoever is involved will be sanction. In the same vein, the defeated Senatorial candidate of the opposition CPC for Gombe Central Senatorial District, Mohammad Babikir has declared that  last Saturdays Senatorial election in which Governor Danjuma Goje was declared a winner was marred with irregularities, therefore threatened to go court if INEC did not reverse its declaration.Mohammed Babikir who spoke to news men yesterday in Gombe alleged that a lot of offences that contradict the electoral acts were perpetrated during the elections, saying he has all the facts to support his argument.
