Wanted: More Choices Please!

Published by Huffington Post on Sat, 15 Aug 2015

In every election that I have been witness to, I have noticed that the Democratic Party believes that it has a lock on the minority vote. Every four years I hear how this political party is going to improve this, and enhance services for that. However, at the end of their tenure what has really happened' The Republican Party has not been at all enthusiastic to work with this President, but neither have the democrats. I have heard so many times how the Republic Party is racist and they cannot stand that the President is Black. While I agree that sentiment, I have to ask myself if Democrats have been as enthusiastic about working with this President as they could be. I really do not think so. Let's be honest, in 2008 many Democrats were really upset that a young Senator from Chicago started his journey to the Presidency and slowly but surely did what many deemed impossible and what may be considered a little political taboo. Ever since, I was young, I came to know that the Democratic Party stood for the underdog and communities and the Republican Party stood more for business. The Democratic Party was the Party of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement, the ERA, and Women's Liberation. As true as that is, I was so incredibly disappointed at the way the Democrats treated one President Elect Barack Obama. When I think of the legislation that President Obama could have passed while having a Democratic Congress, even for a short time, it really upsets me that the Party of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Kennedys did not necessarily do their due diligence to make President Barack Obama's presidency more historical than for the obvious reason. Democrats and Republicans have made it so difficult for any other party to break ground with the American public. The choices are incredibly limited. If we are a true democracy, we need to do better than just a two-party system. Democrats have consistently taken my vote for granted, and Republicans have not courted me at all. These are the two scenarios: one automatically thinks because I'm Black/Hispanic, I am going to vote for their candidate and the other assumes because I'm Black/Hispanic that I may not vote for their candidate so they do not even come in my direction. I, for one, would like to see an election where there are more than two candidates in a general election. I see good qualities in Bernie Sanders just like I see good qualities in Rand Paul. There has got to be room for a candidate or candidates that encompass the qualities that these two possess. The key to a strong democracy is knowing that there are choices not only for one or the other, but also for the other, or the other, or the other. As a Black Hispanic, I cannot limit my options anymore. I see what both parties bring to the table, and if this democracy that we call the United States of America is to work for each and every citizen, I need someone to help me build a bigger table because I want everyone to be able to pull up a chair. -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
