A Small Apartment Turned Luxury Retreat

Published by Huffington Post on Sun, 16 Aug 2015

The owners of this New York City pied a terre requested that their two-bedroom apartment be a true respite from the hustle and bustle of Midtown. They wanted their home to be a place where they could recharge after the long work day. Dcor Aid designers worked with a cool gray palette to make the space feel calm and tranquil. The designers used this foundation to create a backdrop of luxurious materials like the marble coffee table, leather side tables and cowhide pillows, which have the power to make even the smallest space feel sumptuous. The home evolved to become a little homage to iconic mid-century modern designs, which are sprinkled throughout the space. In order to stretch the budget, and at the same time, create a utterly unique space, the designers shopped at auctions house and consignment stores where they scored some great finds like the vintage credenza and the leather side chairs -- pieces that create that one-of-a kind interior. One small space trick that the Dcor Aid designers used was to incorporate mirrors throughout the apartment. But they didn't stop at hanging mirrors on the walls. They also brought in mirrored furniture, and even the lamps are made of reflective materials! The mirrors and furniture reflect light making the entire space feel bigger and brighter. The result is a space that feels like a hotel retreat with all the comforts of home. The backdrop for this tablescape is a round marble coffee table, topped with quartz, leather and lucite, even this small vignette makes a big design statement. One common mistake made when designing a smaller space is to bring in too many smaller pieces of art, resulting in a cluttered feeling. By instead choosing a large focal point, the entire room actually feels larger. If you have a small bedroom, think streamline! By keeping the bedroom furniture minimal, the focus is just on the bed. And when it's time to choose a bed, pick one that has a low profile, the room will actually then feel larger. And remember -- reflective surfaces aren't just for the living room! The mirror and the lamps bring additional light into the alcove bed space making it all feel much larger.
