Published by Huffington Post on Mon, 17 Aug 2015

A football coach has written a touching open letter to his son just hours after the teenager's death. The Herald Sunin Australia reports that former Australian Football League player Brett Rattens 16-year-old son, Cooper, was killed in a car crash on August 16. The current Hawthorn assistant coach honored him with a beautiful tribute in the newspaper. He said his son would be with him "every minute of every day." You will be with us every minute of every day. You had so much potential and ability in the things you set your mind to. You have been taken way too soon and we will miss your smile, your laugh and all your cheekiness. These memories will last forever. I wish I could kiss you, hug you and hold you tight. I love you, my son. We love you so much always and forever. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of Brett Ratten today http://t.co/gvComPOVaa pic.twitter.com/krAhdL62xH Triple M Melbourne (@TripleMMelb) August 16, 2015 Brett Ratten's tribute to son Cooper: 'I wish I could kiss you, hug you and hold you tight' http://t.co/FEeINYeiHp pic.twitter.com/hi5PGOLXjb Herald Sun (@theheraldsun) August 16, 2015 According to the Herald Sun, Cooper and two of his Yarra Glen Football Club teammates allegedly took a set of car keys that may have belonged to a parent. There was limited visibility because of foggy conditions, and Cooper was in the back of the car when the driver lost control. The newspaper reports the driver was traveling at more than 100 kilometers per hour (about 62 miles per hour) and that Cooper was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. After hearing the heartbreaking news, love and support poured in online from both current and former AFL players and clubs, including the Melbourne Football Club, whose players wore black arm bands in honor of Cooper. We're wearing two arm bands today in honour of 1955 premiership player Geoff McGivern and one for Brett Ratten's son Cooper. #AFLDogsDees Melbourne FC (@melbournefc) August 16, 2015 With much sadness, all at Hawthorn FC send their condolences to Brett Ratten and his family.
