Devin Funchess Injury: Updates on Panthers WR's Hamstring and Return

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 20 Aug 2015

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Devin Funchess is dealing with a hamstring injury that will keep him out of the team's next preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.Continue for updates.Funchess Suffers Strained Hamstring; Could Return Next WeekThursday, Aug. 20Head coach Ron Rivera said Funchess wouldn't play against the Dolphins but could be back in practice as soon as Monday, per Joe Person of theCharlotte Observer. On the same day that the team lost No. 1 receiver Kelvin Benjamin for the season with an ACL injury, Funchess tweaked his hamstring, according to Tim Durr of BlackandBlueReview.com (h/t Darin Gantt of NBCSports.com).Preparing for his rookie season after being selected 41st overall out of the University of Michigan by the Panthers in the 2015 draft, Funchess has had difficulty staying on the field.Funchess' selection was to create a wide receiving duo that would be able to compete with any unit in the NFL. With both wide receivers containing plenty of sizeBenjamin is 6'5" and Funchess 6'4"quarterback Cam Newton was going to have some trusty targets to hone in on.Add in tight end Greg Olsen, who also racked up 1,008 yards last season, and the Panthers entered the preseason as a team laden with weapons. But with Carolina's top wide receiver out, Funchess was set to be the team's new leading man after recording 1,715 yards in three seasons at Michigan. The Panthers possess a receiving group that contains the likes of Ted Ginn Jr., Brenton Bersin and Jerricho Cotchery, players who have spent their careers as third and fourth receivers. It will be up to one of these fringe players to step up and carry the offensive load through the air while Funchess recovers.Stats courtesy of Sports-Reference.com
