Diego Godin, Atletico Madrid Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Comments

Published by Bleacher Report on Fri, 21 Aug 2015

Atletico Madrid have agreed a new contract with Uruguay international captain Diego Godin, keeping the marquee defender at the club for a further four years.Bleacher Report UK shared the news on social media:The 2013-14 La Liga champions confirmed the new deal on theirofficial website, stating Godin has become "one of the pillars of our team," and the player "has always wanted to continue [to be] linked to Atletico."Godin has won six major trophies with the Calderon side since his signing in 2010 and scored the vital goal at the Camp Nou that sealed the Spanish championship two seasons ago.The news will come as a relief to Atletico fans who have seen an exodus of top players leave in recent times, including Diego Costa and Arda Turan. However, 29-year-old Godin has committed his future to his club, which will surely earn him legendary status at the end of his stay.Joseph Walkerof ESPNFC.com recently commented on the player's incredible loyalty to coach Diego Simeone:It is refreshing to see that in the modern game sometimes money, in fact, cannot buy you love. The Calderon faithful should be jumping for joy that the defender has agreed to stay and commit his best years to the club. It seems to be a match made in heaven and long may it continue. For Los Rojiblancos to compete this season, they needed to retain Godinnot only for his defensive acumen, but also for his leadership skills. He is one of the great centre-backs in world football, and his loss might havefacilitateda fall down the Liga table.Simeone can now look forward knowing he has the strength of Godin under his command, building toward the promised land of a second league title as they battle against the superpowers of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
