Idimu residents live in fear of flood

Published by Tribune on Wed, 21 Mar 2012

The residents of Idimu area of Lagos have started entertaining fears that the coming rainy season may spell doom for them if nothing is quickly done to avert impending flooding of the area.Community News gathered from the residents that some parts of the areas had been flooded by the few downpours in February. It was learnt that the situation had been giving the people some concern as they reasoned that the situation might become worse in May when rain would start.'We are in for trouble. The little downpour we have seen so far gave us problems, as some houses were flooded during light rains in February,' Alhaji Fatai Adebayo, a community leader in the area, told Community News. When Community News visited the area, it was observed that the entrance to a public primary school in the area was flooded. An alternative route was created to allow teachers and pupils enter the school. To avoid disaster when major rainfall will start in about two months time, the residents are calling on the state government to act fast to save them from the agony of flooding, the type that was witnessed last year.'We are calling on the state government to help us stop flooding from this community. We now live in fear that flooding will sack us from our houses anytime from now.Government must construct drainage and clear water ways. The local council is trying but the problem of flooding in the area cannot be handled by local government alone, the state must intervene and that is why we are calling on the government to act fast.'Meanwhile, residents of Dopemu, Adealu and Iyana-Ipaja have been commending the Federal Government for listening to their cries by completing the construction of the canal in the area.It will be recalled that the Federal Government through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), awarded contract for the canal in the area to put a final stop to the problem of flooding in the area.'Initially, we thought the contractor handling the project would not complete it on time, but after the publication in your newspaper (Community News), the contractor (Julius Berger) doubled up and they are about finishing the construction of the canal now,' a resident said.
