Kogi govt offers to mediate in boundary dispute between 2 communities

Published by Tribune on Wed, 28 Mar 2012

THE Kogi State government is set to begin the boundary demarcation of the disputed Iyamoye and Ekinrin Adde communities which has remained in dispute following a Supreme Court ruling. The resolve to damarcate the area was made by Mr Yomi Awoniyi, the state deputy governor, at a meeting with representatives of the two communities. It will be recalled that the Supreme Court had on 7 May, 1996, ruled on the disputed land between Iyamoye and Ekinrin Adde communities, but the ruling had been contrued by the concerned parties, to be in their favours, thus leading to communal crisis. The deputy governor called on the two affected communities to bury their hatchets and called on them to show their willingness to accord the state boundary commission the maximum cooperation to successfully carry out a hitch free exercise.According to the deputy governor, the demarcation exercise will begin in the middle of April and will last for six weeks.Already, a field team, made up of the representatives of the two warring communities had been put in place.Awoniyi said the Supreme Court ruling will serve as a reference in the demarcation. In their separate remarks, Mr Fadile Kabiru and Chief Samuel Faleke who spoke on behalf of the two communities, said they were ready for peace, adding that this was the first time a government will come to a round table discussion over the disputed land.
