However, if you purchase all, or nearly all, of the contents in your closet from onestore, it can amount to about the same thing. If you'd prefer not to be a walking ad for the retailerhowever good-looking and comfortable its gingham shirts and pantsarethere's a way to get that similar feelfrom more than one store. Below we rounded up seven shops that have comparable styles.1. PenfieldThough it lacks the name recognition of J.Crew, Penfield's clothes do offer a similarly preppy, New England aesthetic, with a strong focus on outerwear. This fall's collection has a couple of standout winners: Its stylish jackets and vests and patterned sweaters are easy recommendations, and its messenger bags and backpacks are just as functional and durable as they are good-looking. You can shop a decent amount of Penfield's clothes and accessories on its site; you can also more conveniently find them on Amazon, East Dane, and Urban Outfitters.2. Bonobos Bonobos was founded relatively recently in 2007, with a mission to make better-fitting pants and create a totally painless online-shopping experience. What began with their best-selling Washed Chinos has since expanded to include a full line of shirts, suits, jackets, sweaters, and more, as well as retail shops, which theycall"guideshops". The price point of Bonobos'inventoryis comparable to J.Crew's pretty much across the board.3. Todd SnyderBefore launching his eponymous menswear line in 2011, Todd Snyder designed for Polo Ralph Lauren and was head of menswear at both Gap and J.Crew. His casual American classics will cost you considerably more than J.Crew's but, if the style is one you consistently gravitate toward, it may be worth it to invest in a few higher-end pieces that'll have a longer life in your closet. Snyder's superb selection of ties and tailored clothesare clear favorites.4. Scotch & SodaThis Amsterdam-based fashion brand is a bit more forward than J.Crew in its approach to design, but not by much. J.Crew's been experimenting with trendier clothing of late, and to mixed reactions from customers. If your review of them has been positive so far, then you should check out Scotch & Soda. The retailer gives classicslike button-down shirts, jeans, sweaters, and morea modern feel and trimmer fit.5. Ben ShermanBen Shermanis acontemporary menswear with British roots. Its foundation is in shirt-making and it's still what the brand does best today, though it has since expanded to include a full line of clothes and accessories. The look of the clothesis clean and simple, and they're great for work. Its chinos, cardigans, jackets, suits, andginghamscan easilybe mistaken for J.Crew. And you'll pay about the same price (or less)for them. Amazon, East Dane, and Nordstrom all Ben Sherman in stock.6. Club MonacoLike, Todd Snyder, it's fair to say Club Monaco is a step up from J.Crew. Its prices are higher, but so is the quality of the clothes you're paying that heftier sum for. However,if you feel as thoughyou've outgrown your favorite J.Crew shirts and slacks, and you want to differentiate yourself from the rest of your J.Crew-clad coworkers, youcan find the same look in Club Monaco's expertly tailored wool topcoats, dress trousers, cashmere henleys, cardigans, and gingham shirts. We're fairly confident the two retailers even use some of the same models.7. Billy ReidIf Billy Reid's clothes look familiar to you, it could be because the designer has collaborated with J.Crew for its In Good Company section in the past. The 2012 CFDA menswear designer of the year runsa much smaller operation, though, just 12 retail locations and e-commerce with an emphasis on US manufacturing and high-quality construction. It's evident in his luxury-feeling herringbone coats, quilted jackets, honeycomb sweaters, and selvage jeans. More of the designer's workwear-inspired clothes can be found at Amazon, East Dane, Mr Porter, andNordstrom.SEE ALSO:8 tech gadgets that pay for themselves over timeREAD MORE:The best portable Bluetooth speakers under $100Join the conversation about this story
