Fishfarmers complain of high cost of feeds

Published by Tribune on Fri, 15 Apr 2011

Fish farmers in Oyo State have called on the Federal Government to assist them in solving the problem of high prices of feeds and other challenges in the market. The National Secretary - General of Catfish Farmers Association of Nigeria (CAFAN), Mr. Rotimi Oloye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recently in Ibadan that the price of fish meal, among other sundry expenses, have gone up from N350 to N500 per kilogramme and N350,000 to N500,000 per tonne.Oloye attributed the increment in the cost of fish meal to high cost of foreign exchange which affected the naira negatively with respect to the exchange rate.He said further that full fat soya which was a byproduct of soya beans was presently sold for N135 per kilogramme from an old price of N88 and, from N88,000 to N135,000 per tonne.Oloye said the processors or producers, who turned the soya beans to full fat soya, complained of high cost of diesel used in the process, saying it gave rise to the increase in the price of full fat soya.Right now, the rain is not enough, the CAFAN chief said while speaking of another challenge.Oloye added that with inadequate rainfall or water, the   chances of fish multiplying in the pond or river was very slim as such production would decline. The secretary said that supply of fish feed from the Hausa traders from the north had reduced too because they also complained of high cost of production.
