Lagos NURTW boss warns drivers against dangerous driving

The Secretary of the Lagos State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mr Mathew Dayo Oloko, has appealed to drivers in Lagos State, especially those plying inter-state routes, to drive carefully during this Easter holiday.He gave this advice in his office in his Easter goodwill message to members of his union.Comrade Oloko said that drivers on inter-state routes should avoid speeding, overloading and overtaking at dangerous bends.He explained that those three vices were the major causes of road accidents on the highway, noting: 'Overtaking, overloading and over-speeding are major causes of road accidents and drivers must try as much as possible to avoid them to ensure an accident-free Easter.'Apart from this, he also advised that drivers should shun alcohol and other hard drugs while embarking on journey, as taking alcohol and drugs may lead to accidents.Comrade Oloko equally pointed out that drivers must ensure that all their vehicle papers were in order so as to avoid any unpleasant problem with the law enforcement agencies like the police and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).'As members of the NURTW, we must make sure that our vehicle papers are up to date to avoid any disagreement with Police and other law enforcement agencies. If your papers are intact, nobody will disturb you'.The NURTW scribe advised drives to always ensure that they check their vehicles properly and ensure that the vehicles were in good condition before embarking on a trip to avoid delay which may be as a result of vehicle breakdown.'We must check our vehicles very well, light, tyres, breaking system and other component things must be checked to avoid delay on the highway.'He finally advised that drivers on inter-state routes must subscribe to the Road Accident Health Insurance Scheme (RAHIS) of the NURTW and always make sure they carry their passenger manifests.
