Traveller decries activities of youths in Onitsha

Acommunity leader, Innocent Alison Abugu of Ogbunik in Oyi Local Government Area, Anambra State, has appealed to the state government, security agencies, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other stakeholders in assisting to check the activities of criminals in Onitsha metropolis and its neighbourhood so as to save the lives of innocent citizens and stop wanton destruction of property on the road.The community leader made the appeal when he paid visit to the Nigerian Tribune House, Oke Ado, Ibadan, last Thursday, adding that the activities of the criminals at Iweka community in Onitsha needed the urgent attention of all stakeholders in the security sector, most importantly, the area along the Young shall grow motor park.Innocent Abugu, who was returning from a burial ceremony in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State on Saturday March 17, 2012, said that some youths in the community had constituted themselves into social problem through illegal extortion of valuables and money from innocent motorists under the pretext that they were the real inhabitants of the area and legal drivers who had the authority to do anything.He said he and other travellers had got to the motor park only to fall into the hands of the illegal youths, posing as drivers.He said after a prolonged negotiations, the youths agreed to a fare of N2,000 per passenger to Ibadan, but regretted that the bus only took them to Asaba.The driver had informed them that the vehicle was faulty and refused to refund the money paid, at around 2:00 a.m.He, however, said that it was painful when they got to Asaba the capital of Delta State, when the driver of the vehicle said that it had mechanical fault and dropped them there and said that he immediately called his relation in Onitsha to inform security agents of his ordeal on the road and said that one of the illegal drivers boastfully said that even if he called Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and the government authorities, nothing would happen to them.The community leader, therefore, appealed to the Federal Government and other tiers of government in the eastern axis of the country to step up security arrangement in the area to curb the activities of illegal commercial vehicle operators who were bent at tarnishing the image of the country.
