MINISTER of State for Education, Barr. Kenneth Olorogun Gbagi, has said that government was willing to engage youths by investing in sports development across the country.Gbagi, who was represented by the Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education (FME), Abuja, Garba Yabo Bello, at the 40th yearly inter-house sports competition of the Federal Science and Technical (FST) College, Yaba, affirmed shortly after the competition that Nigeria has raw talents that needed to be developed.For this reason, he added, the Federal Government has continually demonstrated its commitment to developing talents among Nigerian children using sports as a veritable instrument. Aside the health and wealth benefits inherent in sports and athletics, he said, most importantly, that it redirects the minds of the young ones from mischievous acts to useful engagements.To this end, he added, FME is doing everything possible to demonstrate the importance attached to sports in all its 104 unity colleges. We will continue to support sporting activities in these colleges as significant avenues for nurturing our youths towards total development in social, moral, physical and intellectual fronts.Meanwhile, the principal of the school, Engr. Mike Ofor, has urged that adequate attention should be given to sports because it inculcates discipline in the youths and creates ample opportunities for training in leadership skills, co-operation, endurance and the spirit of sportsmanship, and that is why at FST we accord sports a pride of place.With 17 gold, nine silver and 13 bronze medals, Niger House emerged winner of the competition, having demonstrated, from the inception of the competition, good athletic attributes, which later confirmed the spectators predictions at the end of the game.Ethiope House won the second prize with 12 gold, 11 silver and 11 bronze medals, while Benue House came third with 11 gold, 12 silver and 13 bronze medals.
