SHE sauntered by as spritely as her baby bump could allow. Smiling smugly to herself, Yinka, the first time expectant mum counted her blessings as she walked down her street in a tight T-shirt and denim jeans. Thank God for good health, she told herself as she moved in the direction of the local supermarket. As she walked past, someone stared at her uncomfortably. Pa Olusanya, a neighbour and landlord of one of the houses on the street gaped at her. He frowned and shook his head as he sat on his balcony. Then he tapped his wife of 35 years, Mama Seun, who had given him five children. The children were now adults and parents in their own right. What is this he asked his wife. Quickly she replied, What is whatPapa shook his head again, Why is she dressed like that Is it that she wants to kill the baby or because she cannot afford a maternity gownMama Seun roused herself reluctantly, and recounted her previous conversation with the young lady the previous day. Yinka believes that this is new generation and they dress differently, at least that is what she told me when I talked to her yesterday, said Mama. She went on to inform her husband that her own daughter Seun, had dressed the same way four years ago while expecting her first child in the United states.Papa stared at the road again and shook his head fro the third time. This scenario reoccurs daily ad young women try to keep their sense o style even in pregnancy. While looking good is a priority to most women, those in this phase of life need to dress nicely but comfortably as a pregnant woman can faint if her clothes are too tight.
