Tension at Agunfoye, Ikorodu, over demolition of houses

Published by Tribune on Thu, 05 Apr 2012

Tension has gripped residents of Agunfoye community in Igbgbo area of Lagos State over the demolition of about 15 houses in the area by people suspected to be land speculators.Residents of the community have also appealed to the state governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, to once again intervene and save them from the land grabbers. Some residents of the community were last week injured as hired thugs invaded the community with a mission to demolish, over 200 houses whose owners had failed to ratify their plots of land.Community News gathered that the problem started in 2006 when the family that sold the land instructed land owners in the community to pay N97,000 for compensation.A clergyman in the community, who was also beaten by the thugs, Isaac Ibikunle Oni, while speaking with Community News, stated that Governor Fashola had sometime in 2008, saved them from the land speculators, who have now come back to hunt them. The pastor in charge of Salvation Compass Outreach Ministry, narrated that he bought his land in 2005 from the Adegoruwa Family, who later returned in 2008 and demanded for N97,500 ratification fee.'Governor Fashola saved us from them then and we have two court cases, but we were surprised that some people had invaded our community and they had started demolishing our houses,' Pastor Oni statedThe clergyman added that 'the first case was against the ratification that the family was demanding for, since they sold the land to us, while the second case was against a member of the same family, who wanted us to re-buy the land.'He claimed to have won a case of baaleship and the head of the family and wanted us to buy the land afreash, but he was the treasurer of the family, when they first sold the land to us.'When contacted, the image maker in charge of the state Police Command, Joseph Jaiyeoba, insisted that the incident was not reported to the police.
