Nine-year-old wins Lagos Spelling Bee competition

NINE-YEAR-OLD Emeka Chibuike of Housing Estate Primary School in Mosan, Okunola Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has emerged winner in the primary school category in this year's Spelling Bee competition.Chibuike beat 56 other pupils from various public primary schools across the 57 local governments and LCDAs in a keenly contested finale.Wife of the Lagos State Governor, Dame Abimbola Fashola, State Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, Executive Director, New Era Foundation, Mr. Yemi Osilaja and other government officials and stakeholders in the education sector were among the dignitaries, who graced the competition held at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa.Chibuike's feat earned him a giant trophy with a price money of N150, 000, while Popoola Mariam, of L.A Primary School, Ilogbo-Elegba in Oto-Awori LCDA clinched second position with a price of N100, 000 and a trophy and Ajayi Shakiru from RCM primary School Lekki, who emerged third, went home with N75, 000.The visibly excited winners commended their teachers for the coaching and the New Era Foundation for establishing the Spelling Bee competition, which they said has impacted tremendously in the development of the children and engaging them in healthy competition.Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, who spoke on the outcome of the competition, described it as a motivation for those, who did not win to go back and study hard in order to win future competitions.'This is healthy competition, there is always another time for others who did not win, but somebody has got to win,' she said.
