Borno gets Almajiri feeding panel

Published by Guardian on Thu, 05 Apr 2012

SHEHU of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Garbai El-Kanemi, has inaugurated a 13-member feeding committee to feed Almajiris in the various Islamic Tshangaya schools, following their inability to beg because of the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed by the Joint Task Force (JTF).The Islamic schools are located in the Maiduguri Metropolitan and Jere councils of Borno State, where a state of emergency was imposed by President Goodluck Jonathan on December 31, 2011.Presenting a N20 million donation from the state government to the committee at his palace yesterday in Maiduguri, Garbai El-Kanemi said: 'The dusk-to-dawn curfew does not allow the Almajiris to beg in the streets and houses in order to feed and survive. This is why Governor Kashim Shettima had to release N20 million to the Borno Emirate Council (BOEC) for disbursement and feeding of the Almajiris in the two affected council areas of Borno'.However, he noted that all the schools and Almajiris are to be verified by the committee members before procuring the food items for distribution. The monarch advised the committee to engage members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) on the distribution of food items.Responding, the committee Chairman and Wali of Borno, Abdullahi Idriss, pledged to carry out the assignment faithfully.
