Oyo workers suspend strike

Published by Tribune on Fri, 06 Apr 2012

THE striking workers in Oyo State on Thursday suspended the three-week-old strike embarked upon following the inability of the state government to put in place an acceptable national minimum wage. The chairman Joint Negotiating Council Comrade Nurudeen Arowolo told Nigerian Tribune in Ibadan that the strike was suspended for two weeks to allow for negotiation. He explained that the suspension of the strike was to allow the labour and the state government to meet and agree on an acceptable salary table. He said that following the intervention of the officials of the Federal Ministry of Labour, Ibadan elders and other well-meaning Nigerians, the labour decided to suspend the strike.Arowolo explained that at different meetings, the labour had been persuaded to suspend the strike to allow for meaningful negotiation with the state government and expressed optimism that the state government would allow negotiation to take place with a view to finding a lasting solution to the impasse. He said that after the Easter holiday workers in the state were expected to be at their duty posts on Tuesday. The labour leader added that negotiations would commence immediately for prompt resolution of the crisis. However, he said that if after suspension of the strike and there was no meaningful negotiation, workers would not hesitate to resume total strike. It will be recalled that following the presentation of a salary table, which was rejected, the workers embarked on an indefinite strike which paralysed activities in public places and government agencies. As a result, officials of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity and Ibadan elders intervened with a view to finding a lasting solution to the crisis.
