NFF silent over Emenike's racism case

Published by Guardian on Fri, 06 Apr 2012

NO form of succour will be extended to embattledSuper Eagles and Spartak Moscow forward, Emmanuel Emenike, from the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF), until the FA receives an official correspondence from either the Nigerian international or its Russian counterpart.According to the Federation, it was out of place for it to petition the world's football governing body, FIFA, or react to an issue simply because it has been bandied in the international media even when a Nigerian was involved until it is formally communicated to.The 24-year-old striker, who joined Spartak last summer from Fenerbahce of Turkey for a fee of 10 million was racially abused by fans of Dynamo Moscow during a Russian Premier League derby last week and he responded with what was considered an obscene gesture towards the fans. With no punishment to his Russian abusers, the Russian FA instead slammeda $17,000 fine on Emenike for the gesture as well as another suspended sentence on the former Fenerbahce player until the end of the season for pointing his middle finger in the direction of the opponents' fans.According to deputy chairman of the Russian FA ethics committee, Vladimir Vasilyev, who spoke after the sanctions were meted on the Nigerian, said: 'We decided that it was an adequate punishment... We also took into account the fact that the player later apologised for his action.'Even though this development has drawn flak from several quarters especially since racial slur has become a recurring decimal, spokesperson of the Nigerian FA, Ademola Olajire told The Guardian in an interview that 'we cannot do anything about the said fine because neither the Russian FA nor the Nigerian player in question has communicated formally to us. Until we receive a correspondence along this line, we will not be in a position to do anything on the matter.'He was, however, silent on whether the Federation has made any effort to reach the Nigerian star to establish the veracity or otherwise of the reports.Reminded that a Nigerian has been treated in a manner seen to be unfair by many and reported widely in international media, Olajire responded, 'We don't react officially based on items from international media. Institutions and organisations deal with matters that are brought to their knowledge through official correspondence.Though Facebook use doesn't necessarily cause narcissism, Rosen said it can exacerbate already-existing symptoms. 'It provides the opportunity to say what you want with no one seeing you.' He, however, expressed regret over the rising tide of racial abuse in the country, which is host of the 2018 FIFA World Cup saying, 'It is sad that football fans are targeting African and indeed black players for racial attack. It is time it is established that racism has no place in sports because sports apart from giving excitement, is practiced by people from all walks of life.'Incidences of racial abuse on dark-skinned footballers or those of African origin has been upswing in the recent past. Among those that have been racially abused in Russia are Super Eagles forward, Osaze Odemwingie, during his time with Lokomotiv Moscow and Congo's Chris Samba.Odemwingie, only recently turned down an amazing 640,000-a-month (about N160m) offer to join Anzhi Makhachkala in his bid not to return to Russia. On January 6, Tom Adeyemi, an English footballer of Nigerian descent, broke down in tears at Anfield when Liverpool Football Club routed League One outfit Oldham Athletic 5-1 in an FA Cup match.Adeyemi was hurled with racial abuses as he ran towards the stands to retrieve the ball. It was alleged that a fan shouted at the player, who is on loan at Oldham from Norwich City.Players from both teams rallied to console and comfort the 20-year-old Adeyemi, son of a Nigerian father and a British mother, who was drenched in tears.
