Jonathan launches National Tax Policy

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday formally launched the National Tax Policy and Tax Identification Number (TIN), describing the twin event as 'historic' and crucial in the nation's journey to modern tax system. Speaking in a brief ceremony at the State House, Abuja, Jonathan noted that the formal launch marked the culmination of a journey which started about a decade ago. He recalled that the idea of national tax policy first came up from the report of a presidential study and private sector working group set up in the year 2002 which was saddled with the responsibility of examining the nation's tax system. Jonathan said the national tax policy evolved after wide consultations and deliberations at the three tiers of government and all sectors of the economy.
