PDP BOT: 'Obasanjo's replacement to emerge by consensus

Published by Daily Trust on Sat, 07 Apr 2012

The ruling Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) Board of Trustees (BOT) Secretary Senator Walid Jibrin yesterday said that a new chairman for the board will emerge through consensus.Jibrin, who spoke with journalists, said the decision of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to quit as the PDP BOT chairman will not break the party.Jibrin, also told Daily Trust yesterday that he would oversee the BOT in consultation with the national chairman of the party before a new BOT chairman is elected. He said having been elected as secretary of the BOT only last month, the onus lies on him to oversee the BOT before the election of a new chairman as he enjoys the overwhelming support of the members who unanimously elected him a secretary last month. The BOT scribe said though he is yet to meet with other members of the board, the position of the constitution on the matter is clear and has decided to give the clarification since former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called him to inform him of the resignation.'The former president has called and confirmed to me that he has resigned as the PDP BOT chairman.'I tried to explain to him that this is the time the party needs him most and that he should reconsider his position, but he told me that this is the best time for him to leave.'When I could not get him to change his mind, I wished him success in his future endeavor.Alhaji Jibrin called on all PDP members to remain calm saying the resignation of Obasanjo will not bring any crack in the party as the leaders of the party are out to ensure that the necessary things are done to enable a smooth election of a new BOT chairman. On the issue of zoning, the BOT scribe said there are indications that the zoning principle would guide the election of a new BOT chairman more so as it was used in the last convention of the party, but stressed that he cannot say which particular zone would have it as members of the BOT will have to sit to take a decision on that.
