Alaafin throws birthday party for Ayaba Jolade

Published by Tribune on Mon, 09 Apr 2012

One of the wives of the Alaafin of Oyo, Alhaja Musiliat Jolade, has described her relationship with the Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III, as simply that of a wife to her husband. While speaking with Community News during her 50th birthday celebration held at the Aganju Forecourt, Alaafin's palace recently, Jolade, fondly called 'Jolly' by her husband, said, 'I see the Alaafin not as Alaafin or Kabiyesi, but as my husband. We relate together as husband and wife, which is the most important thing to me. I really love him and he loves me too,' she said. The birthday bash, which was thrown in honour of the London-based wife by the Oba Adeyemi, had in attendance many dignitaries from all walks of life, including House of Representatives member, representing Oyo Federal Constituency, Honourable Kamil Akinlabi; the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Mrs Monsurat Sunmonu; Oyo State Commissioner for Works and Transports, Alhaji Yunus Akintunde; Chairman, Odu'a Investment Company Limited and former Secretary to Oyo state Government, Chief Sarafadeen Alli; Chairmen, Caretaker Committee of Atiba and Oyo West local governments, Akeem Adeyemi and Soji Ojoawo, Onpetu of Ijeru, Oba Sunday Oyediran, among others.Elated for being privileged to be the traditional ruler's wife, Jolade, who had danced gleefully before the guests at the Aganju Forecourt, said, 'It is a privilege for me to be one of the wives of the Alaafin. I feel excited and great witnessing today. I really feel happy and blessed. I give thanks to the Almighty Allah.'Speaking on why he threw such an elaborate party for his wife, Oba Adeyemi said he cherished the wife because he married her at a very tender age such that he never thought she could cope with the palace's rites and stay with him till date.According to Alaafin, 'aside this, my wife, Jolade, had four children for me and all of them are graduates in different disciplines. I marriedthe lady when she was very young and when she joined the palace, we took her through all the traditional inductions, guidance and palace etiquette. Apart from that, I also took her to several parts of the world, where she was educated. She came back and nobody thought she would be able to cope with the life in the palace as a very young lady. That was about 30 years ago.'She had four children for me and all of them are graduates. Two of them graduated from London University. A wife who had done that and moved over to London to take care of her children deserves this type of celebration, so that every housewife can see her as role model.
