LCC, Ikoyi Club hold Easter Monday Squash tourney

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 Apr 2012

THE battle for supremacy between the squash sections of Lagos Country Club (LCC) and Ikoyi Club 1938 will be hot today when the stars of both clubs square up in a tournament tagged Easter Monday Squash Tournament.According to LCC captain, Haniel Hadison, whose club hosts the one-day tourney, the day commences with a rumble, which will serve off at noon, with about 40 players from both clubs expected to participate in this curtain raiser billed to last for two hours. At the end of the rumble, there will be prizes for the last man standing and the player with the highest number of games. The rumble, according to Hadison, will give way to the tourney proper in which both clubs are expected to field 10 men and five veterans respectively. He added that a simple ranking system would generate 10 match-ups expected to produce grueling encountersthat would literally set the squash courts of LCC on fire. Winners of these first round matches would then be pooled into a round robin of five players each by balloting, with the winners of each group engaging one another to determine the winner of the tournament. Both the winner, the runner-up and the best loser in the second round matches will cart home exciting prizes, including a television set, a refrigerator, rackets, squash shoes and sports bags. For the veterans' category, Hadison says there will be no first round as the players would go straight into the round robinstage, also by balloting, while the ultimate winner, the runner-up and the best loser would take home handsome prizes. All the matches, he said, would be best of three and scoring will be American.
