NYSC is Nigeria's last hope

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 Apr 2012

THE National Youths Service Corp (NYSC) has been described as the training ground for the future leaders of Nigeria, who will chart a new order that will engender peaceful coexistence for an already disintegrating nation.Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, who gave the indication at the terminal parade/official closing ceremony of the 2012 Batch 'A' Orientation Course at the Dutse Orientation Camp, said the corps members are the last hope for the future of Nigeria ''NYSC for me at the moment is our last resort in rekindling the distorted unity of the country.''The governor admonished the corps members to be patriotic and reflect on the basic fundamental rudiments of the scheme According to him, 'the course was designed to expose and make you to exhibit leadership qualities in your communities and to positively enhance your intellectual and skillful prowess and make you visible contributors in all the sectors of the economy.'He indicated that ever since the regime of General Yakubu Gowon introduced the scheme in 1973, through a decree, it has not been easy for the younger generation to understand the mechanism. He said the scheme was introduced to enforce the unification and integration of the country immediately after the civil war .''Today, there are so much divisions across various divides but in you we rely upon, in you we see the hope for a better future Nigeria,'' he said.He also urged the Youth Corp members to embrace the compulsory national service stressing that thegovernment on its part would do all it can within its power to provide protection for the members. The state NYSC Director, Mrs. Stella Gambo Abba enjoined the corps members to abide by the oath of allegiance .'Wherever you are posted to, you are expected to make efforts to endear yourselves to the communities by appreciating and respecting their culture and values,' while urging them to make indelible marks in the lives of the people.
