Amina Sambo, Maina task women on poverty, insecurity

Published by Guardian on Mon, 09 Apr 2012

AT the national women conference of the Nasrul- L- Fatih Society of Nigeria (NASFAT), which ended in Abuja yesterday, women were charged to serve as role models to their immediate families and societies. In the statement issued by the forum, wife of the Vice President, Hajia Amina Namadi Sambo and the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Zainab Maina, joined others in urging the participants to prevail on their husbands, especially those holding political or administrative offices to ensure that they through good governance, curb the prevailing poverty and insecurity in the country. With the theme, 'Role of women in peace building and conflict resolution,' the speakers asked Muslim women to dialogue to create an atmosphere of peace in Nigeria. The conference also sensitised women on the role of religion with emphasis on moral upbringingas a major step in the prevention of conflicts and resolving matters of common interests in a multi-religious community. The group's National Women Affairs Secretary, Alhaja Nofisat Abiola Arogundade, in her closing remarks, said the forum had succeeded in enlightening women on their roles as managers of the home. She said most of the societal vices were fallouts of the failure of women to perform their roles in the home.'We in this organisation are so much concerned about the security situation in the country in particular and the world at large. Therefore, we want preachers, Muslims or non-Muslims alike to de-emphasise those things that would disintegrate the country and focus on what will unite us.'The Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chairperson, Mrs. Woleemat Alabi, described Islam as a religion of peace, stating the time had come for all to know that Islam abhors violence of any form. The next meeting of the group holds in Osogbo, Osun State in 2014.
