Police dismiss trigger-happy cop in Minna

Published by Tribune on Tue, 10 Apr 2012

THE anti-terrorist policeman who shot and injured a visiting couple at the Peter Seriki road, in Tunga community of Minna, Niger State, last week, has been dismissed from the Nigeria Police.Nigerian Tribune gathered that the dismissal of the policeman followed an orderly room trial which allegedly found him guilty of use of firearms without authorisation. The policeman, a constable, was said to have fired at the car in which the couple was driving, after it was flagged down by his colleague during a stop and search. He was said to have been disarmed almost immediately by some of his superiors after the said shooting, as he was arrested and detained in a police cell for the crime.Though the bullet he allegedly fired at the couple did not cause much harm, it, however, shattered the wind-screen of the vehicle, fragments of which allegedly caused minor injuries to the wife of the man.Confirming the dismissal on Monday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Richard Oguche, in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune in Minna, said the affected officer was found guilty of disgraceful conduct and incivility to members of the public.Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Mrs Desire D. Nsirim, has cautioned officers and men of the command over indiscriminate use of firearms, describing it as unacceptable. She stated this during a tour of Suleja police area command at the weekend, warning that her administration would not condone any act of gross indiscipline by the officers and men of the command.
