WWE Should Reignite TLC Tag Team Wrestling with the Dudley Boyz

Published by Bleacher Report on Thu, 24 Sep 2015

WWE's tag team division is regarded by many fans as being nothing more than a shell of its former self. The glory days of the Attitude Era are over, and since then, the company has either not been able to find a new spark or simply not cared enough to even search for it.But with the return of The Dudley Boyz, the game has now changed. For the first time in a long time, fans have a reason to be excited about tag team wrestling once again, and the fact is Tables, Ladders & Chairs matches should not be that far behind. It's perhaps the best way to get fans hooked on tag team work in WWE. It's an immediate spotlight, a quick fix to develop the Dudleys' return into something much more. Right now, it appears to be just a veteran tag team meant to pop the crowd and deliver some table bumps in the ring.Bubba Ray and D-Von are a nice bit of nostalgia, but it looks to be nothing more.To truly get fans talking and make them care, the match gimmick that put the Dudleys on the map must make a comeback as well.TLC bouts sparked the tag team renaissance of the early 2000s, and it's that era many are still talking about to this day.The Dudley Boyz, along with Edge, Christian and The Hardy Boys, put their bodies on the line night after night in the name of entertainment. All six men gave everything they had because they wanted to steal the show, and that's exactly what they did. They gave the tag team division a renewed fervor and a razor-sharp focus that had never been seen before. Tag team wrestling became a main event attraction and fans all over the world marveled at the TLC matches that created three high-octane duos. The work these three teams did brought a level of excitement that has not been matched since. While the TLC gimmick was merely the vehicle to get the teams over, the guys themselves were the real stars. But in today's WWE, perhaps a gimmick is exactly what's needed. It's not as though the tag teams currently working in WWE have not put in the effort. Los Matadores, The Lucha Dragons, The Prime Time Players and even The Ascension have all worked hard to not only get over but keep fans interested in the process. However, one tag team feud after another has likely left many fans feeling a bit bored. The desire to see a reinvigorated tag team division is surely still there, as it has been for years, but only the TLC concept can truly get fans pumped up for it now.The Dudley Boyz can make that happen.Without TLC, Bubba Ray and D-Von would arguably not have careers today. With Edge and Christian retired and The Hardys gone, The Dudley Boyz are the only TLC team left, and they can bring that experience to the tag team division now.Their primary target would of course be The New Day.The current WWE tag team champions are perhaps the most entertaining performers in WWE today. Kofi Kingston, Big E and Xavier Woods took a failing gimmick and made it work. They put all of themselves into it, and fans have embraced them for it.They're just fun enough to be liked, but their antics are just annoying enough to make them hated.Somewhere in between, they have found their comfort spot, becoming the best trio to lead the division today. They are the perfect foils for The Dudleys and the best candidates to enter into a new TLC rivalry.A new run of TLC matches would light the kind of fire in the tag team division that has not been seen in a very long time. While it's not possible to fully replicate the drama and intensity of the original TLC feuds, a new era would be a great way to elevate the division to new heights. But a gimmick is just a gimmick, and WWE would need to truly focus on tag team wrestling in order to keep any achieved momentum going.TLC matches would be the means to an endbuilding a renewed interest in tag team wrestling and making it relevant once again. WWE's track record in this area is not a good one, and it's unclear if it would improve now. With that said, fans want tag team wrestling to mean something again. They want it to matter like it used to. WWE should put in the effort to make this happen, and it all starts with The Dudley Boyz. They're the key to getting things moving in the right direction.Tom's work can be regularly found on Bleacher Report and his podcast, Tom Clark's Main Event, is available on iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Android, Windows Phone and online.
