Make Your Eyes Speak

Published by Guardian on Sat, 16 Apr 2011

HUMANS have been using cosmetic preparations to define their eyes for so many centuries. Indeed statues and carvings from Ancient Egypt show that eyes were lined even back then. Though it is not known if eyeliners were used for cosmetic, mystic or health reasons in those early days, some historians have suggested that the first eyeliners had nothing to do with beauty enhancement. They suggest that the first attempts at defining the eyes were for health reasons. One, to protect the delicate skin around the eyes from the harsh desert elements, and then for superstitious reasons, to ward off evil beings.Indeed in Nigeria, especially in the rural areas, many a young baby has to endure the process of having the eyes lined with Tiro for protection against evil spirits and evil people. In Ancient Egypt men and women lined their eyes as has been discovered in several excavated tombs of nobles. In modern times, lining is mostly done by women to either make the eyes appear larger or smaller or just to create a more winsome look. Young women of the 2000s revived the gothic look complete with heavily lined, smudged eyes and dark, dark clothing. Mascara is used to lengthen, thicken or strengthen eye lashes also aid eye definition. The fine art of lining the eyes comes naturally to some but for others it is a skill that can be learned. To open up the eye and make it look larger, line the bottom eyelid with a liquid or pencil liner, using a heavy hand. To minimize big eyes, line the upper lid heavily and smudge the line gently.Powder based liners are lodged in a wood pencil and tend to give a smudged, smoky eyed effect which is great for nights. For a softer daytime look use a liquid eyeliner for a thin, calligraphic line. The liquid liner can be laid on more heavily at night. Eyeliners usually come in dark coloursblack, dark blue, graphite grey and dark brown but they can also be found in beige, white and silver as well as in Maroon, purple, lilac and metallic blues and greens to mention a  few.Kohl and Kajal offer very dark lines and they tend to smudge easily.Heres some trivia from beautynoir.comIn 1917, a man named T. L. Williams created a substance out of petroleum jelly and coal, to beautify his sister, Maybel. It was messy and gooey and ultimately marketed as a lash enhancer under the brand name of Maybelline. The next great innovation in mascara was a cake of soap with black dye applied to the lashes with a brush; still messy, and (I can only imagine) painful.
