Ibori Extradited ToUK, EFCC Hails Action

Published by Guardian on Sat, 16 Apr 2011

FORMER Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, was yesterday extradited to the United Kingdom (UK) after the London Metropolitan Police reportedly foiled an alleged attempt by the former governor to flee from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through a series of complex legal steps.Ibori was re-arrested in his Dubai home and taken to an extradition processing centre from where he was later flown to the UK.It was learnt from UAE government sources that the former governor was accompanied by officers of the UK Metropolitan Police Proceeds of Crimes Unit.Ibori will face three separate trials in the UK relating to money laundering and theft.  Some of his accomplices, including his wife, Theresa, his sister, Christine Ibie-Ibori and his friend Udoamaka-Okoronkwo (nee Onuigbo), are already spending various prison terms in the UK.On April 1, his UK lawyer, Bhadresh Gohil, was given a 10-year sentence. The sentence will run concurrently with a previous seven-year conviction.Meanwhile, the EFCC spokesman Mr. Femi Babafemi has said, in reacting to the latest news on Chief Ibori, that justice can only be delayed but it can never be denied. The eventual extradition lbori from Dubai to UK today (yesterday) is a welcome development and a warning signal to others who do everything to slow down the wheel of criminal prosecution in Nigeria that justice can only be delayed (but) can never be denied, he said.
