Joy in Ekiti as NNPC sells kerosene for N50

Published by Tribune on Thu, 12 Apr 2012

RESIDENTS of Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, were thrown into joy as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) begins sale of kerosene at N50 per litre. When the Nigerian Tribune visited the NNPC mega station on Iworoko Road, Ado-Ekiti, over 1,000 people were met on the queue, waiting patiently to buy the commodity. Most petrol stations in the town where the product was available sold for between N150 and N200, but the availability of the product at the NNPC mega station is already bringing down the price at other petrol stations.Speaking with newsmen, one of those waiting to buy the product, who gave his name as Bunmi Oladele, said she had to come to the NNPC mega station because of the price kerosene was being sold at other petrol stations.'I am here with two 50-litre keg to buy kerosene and as you can see, the queue is long, but I hope it will get to my turn before the product is exhausted,' she said.Another buyer, Hammed Adetunji, who just purchased 50 litres of kerosene, said 'I want to commend the NNPC for coming to our aide with this very important commodity. At N50, I have been able to save N7,500 because kerosene is sold at N200 at the petrol station in my area.'The manager of the station, Mr Tayo Olayade, who also spoke with newsmen, said the station had no control over how much petroleum products were sold, adding that it was the duty of the station to comply with directives of the NNPC as to price of the products.
