2015: Opposition parties seeking united front against PDP 'Ikimi

Published by Tribune on Thu, 12 Apr 2012

Former Minister of Foreign Affairs and national leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Chief Tom Ikimi, has said efforts are being made to unite all opposition political parties in the country with a view to forging a common front that will unseat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2015 presidential election. Ikimi, who made this known during his 68th birthday celebration at his residence, on Tuesday, in Benin City, said the PDP had made several attempts to woo him but that he had refused all the overtures because, according to him 'I strongly believe that we can strengthen the opposition to take over government at the federal level.' Chief Ikimi also said the ACN in Edo State would consolidate its political superiority in the state after the July 14 gubernatorial election in the state, which, he predicted, Governor Adams Oshiomhole would win.He said Nigeria had suffered underdevelopment under the PDP-led administration and that Nigerians needed a viable opposition party to take over the leadership.'I have been in discussions with the leadership of other parties and I think some of them are beginning to listen. And the best time for us to put together the opposition is now, years before the election. Because when it comes too close to the election, people will have their personal interests. Some will want to be president or something else.'But I, Chief Tom Ikimi, has never wanted anything personal. I have had my time as you know very well. I am not looking for positions like president or otherwise; I am looking for legacy that I can bequeath to coming generations. And I hope that we will be able to do that in my life- time.
