Why foreign based players underperform -Taye Taiwo

Published by Tribune on Fri, 13 Apr 2012

NIGERIAN international defender, Taye Taiwo has attributed the foreign-based players lackadaisical performance in Super Eagles 2013 Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda in Kigali to difficulty in adjusting to playing in African soil and not the case of not wanting to don the country's colour. The Queens Park Rangers player said the challenges they are facing for playing for their club and country are telling on the players form whenever they are call on to play for their country.According to Taiwo, they have a very busy training schedule with their European sides and because of the prevailing circumstances; it is difficult to adjust completely as it is a different ball game when they come home.'I do not understand why people keep saying we do not want to come and play, they should stop saying that, it's a different ball game because in Europe, we play together every single day. Every day you train, Monday you train, Tuesday you train, Wednesday you train, Thursday you train, Friday you train and then Saturday you play.'As soon as you get to Africa, it's a different ball game, we need more time to train together, the mentality is different without enough time, it's going to be different and difficult. If you play for your club on Saturday or Sunday, travel and come to Nigeria on Monday and then you still travel on that Monday to go and play a match, you will surely be tired ', the former Marseille player stressed.'It's not easy so people should stop saying they should use the home based players because the professionals do not want to play, they should stop saying that' he concluded.
