Published by Tribune on Fri, 13 Apr 2012

The Special Olympics Nigeria (SON) says it will partner the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to organise a Family Health Forum (FHF), to impart health tips on children with intellectual disabilities.SON's national director, Folashade Bolumole, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Thursday, in Lagos, that the FHF would help families to cope with the hygienic and nutritional needs of such children.Bolumole added that the programme would hold in May, at a yet to be disclosed venue in Lagos.'In this quarter, we would have FHF, in conjunction with UNICEF, to educate the family members of these children on their needs healthwise, and bring to their awareness useful health tips.'Their families need to understand certain hygiene and nutrition for children with special needs, so it is pertinent for folks to understand,' she said. The director also stated that SON would ensure that the children under its tutelage would be engaged in sporting activities organised by the body.'We will guarantee that they are well engaged all through the year and keep them busy.'We have planned state competitions in the South-West region and some parts of the South-East, where children with intellectual disability in local schools will come together and compete,' she said, adding that the children would feature in five Olympic type sports, which are: soccer, basketball, athletics, table tennis and badminton. When asked by NAN if sports were the only medium through which the children could express themselves, she described sports as the most viable outlet for the children to express themselves.
