Lagos: Residents of Ajao-Area appeal to PHCN over felled pole

Published by Tribune on Fri, 13 Apr 2012

The residents of Ajao area, Agbowo,on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, have appealed to officials of the Power Holding Company of Nigerian(PHCN), to come to their rescue as a poll, with life wires, was felled by the rainstorm that damaged a lot of property in Ibadan penultimate Friday.According to the residents in the area, the poll gave way to the sweeping storm that accompanied the rain that fell prior to the Easter holiday, leaving the wires in a very dangerous position for occupants of the houses in the area.Speaking with the Community News on the precarious situation,an elderly man, whose house is the most affected of all the buidings in Ajao, Mr David Ijitona, said the poll fell on the fence of his house, at very close range to the entrance, making entrance into the fenced buiding a very dangerous adventure. When asked if he had informed the PHCN coordinator for the Zone, Mr Ijitona said he promptly informed the coordinator the day it occurred( Thursday), but the PHCN official told him to exercise patience till Tuesday when, after the the public holiday, he would send his men to replace the damaged poll and install the wires. The man said, however, that the officials of the PHCN actually came as promised, but on their arrival, they damanded the sum of N120,000 to repair the broken poll and install the wires that rested comfortably on the wall of affected buiding, making entrance a suicide mission when there was electricity supply. The elderly man said his pleas for them to either remove the wires lying dangerously on his fence or replace the poll fell on deaf hears as they insisted on the payment of the money before they could do any job. When Community News visited the area, the residents were very apprehensive of the likelihood of being electrocuted should there be electricity supply with the situation. When the Community News called the PHCN coordinator for the zone, Mr Adekunle and told him of the situation in the area, he promised that he would send his men to do the job immediately, but reports reaching us had it that nothing had been done to rectify the situation as at the time of filing this report.
