Here's the story behind this controversial 'cold shoulder' dress Hillary Clinton wore in 1993

Published by Business Insider on Wed, 30 Sep 2015

Nobody rocks a colorful, power pantsuit quite like Hillary Clinton. But before the power suit became Clinton's uniform on the campaign trail, she first got a lot of attention for this shoulder-baring frock in 1993:Clinton wore the form-fitting Donna Karan gown to one of her first events at the White House in 1993."This is what's called a cold-shoulder dress," Clinton explained to Lena Dunham during an interview for the "Girls" star's new feminist newsletter, Lenny. "And I wore it for one of our first big events at the White House, in 1993... And like everything I do, it turned out to be controversial. I'm hardly a fashion icon.""I wore this," Clinton continued, "and a lot of the political pundits [said]: 'What is the meaning of this'' and everything.I thought it would be fun!""Donna [Karan] always says that no matter your age, your size, your shoulders always look good," Clinton toldDunham. "It's in the Clinton library, if anybody ever wants to see it."As for why Dunham chose to address the dress in her sit down interview with HRC, the 29-year-old tells INSIDER, "I saw that picture on my friend's Instagram and I was obsessed.""When we showed her that picture, her eyes fully lit up," Dunham recalled over the phone from Los Angeles. "She said it was one of her favorite dresses! She asked if she should bring it back and I was like, 'Yeah, or give it to me!''OO.ready(function() { OO.Player.create('ooyalaplayer', 'Zwb2t1dzp5_NlO8Y-wZS1gd7gRupqM5a'); });Please enable Javascript to watch this videoSEE ALSO:Here's why Lena Dunham started 'Lenny,' her new feminist newsletterJoin the conversation about this storyNOW WATCH: Hillary Clinton slams Donald Trump and his supporter after 'hateful, mean-spirited, divisive rhetoric
